What book are you reading now?
I've just finished Second Sleep, by Robert Harris.

I'm a big fan of Harris, he's a truly great writer. His prose is always a joy to read, but the ending to this one was, to put it mildly, crap.

He's got a new book coming out next month: V2, a novel set against the Germans' V2 rockets in WWII. Hopefully that will see him back to his best, both in writing and plot.

A cabinet of Byzantine Curiorities - Anthony Kaldellis

It's all Greek to me. Boom fucking tish

Interesting bits and pieces in it, but some drab sections too. Eye opener how level headed they were at dealing with plagues, earthquakes and famine they 1500 years ago.

That simple Reacher formula has been the basis for stories for hundreds of years, that's why those books are so successful.

Just finished the latest Jack Reacher book.

He arrives in a new town
Helps a stranger
The stranger has enemies
Kills a few enemies
Gets his leg over kills a few more enemies
Hitch hikes out of town.

Bit like the old Kung Fu TV show from way back when.

Ah Grasshopoer.

Skinks been in a few I seem to remember! I think that’s Hiassens Alter ego! The anti developer warrior! Lots of good books under his belt, surprised more haven’t been transferred to the screen! Tv or cinema

Getting through Star Island by Carl Hiassen . Well written comedy crime nonsense, he’s got a good eye and ear for satirising the absurdities of our world.

Gone to Sea In a Bucket - David Black.

It's actually an audiobook so technically I should be on Deb's What are listening to thread.

Anyway a ripping yarn about being a Submariner in WW 11.

Very good.

The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexander Dumas...

Studied it at school and thought I remembered the story but
he side stories and characters I'd forgotten are making it interesting like it wasn't as a kid in school...

The Chinaman synopsis sounds like a film I’ve seen with Jackie Chan; and Pierce Brosnan playing a dead ringer for Gerry Adams

Re: What book are you reading now?
Its like Lee Child and Reacher. Also Cohen. They do killer debuts, subliminal writing and characters, but can not keep them consistent for so many years.

I supposed compared to movies or series where one successful one sets you up for life. Authors have to keep chipping away and so much less money in books etc.

Stephen Leather * The Chinaman 1992, synopsis below. Always carried and recommended this back in the day, when I was in the Army. Excellent read and adventure.

The Chinaman understood death.

Jungle-skilled, silent and lethal, he had killed for the Viet Cong and then for the Americans. He had watched helpless when his two eldest daughters had been raped and killed by Thai pirates.
Now all that was behind him. Quiet, hard-working and unassuming, he was building up his South London take-away business.
Until the day his wife and youngest daughter were destroyed by an IRA bomb in a Knightsbridge department store.
Then, simply but persistently, he began to ask the authorities who were the men responsible, what was being done. And was turned away, fobbed off, treated as a nuisance.

Which was when the Chinaman, denied justice, decided on revenge. And went back to war.

Brilliant book.

That's the one fella.
Brilliant author, fantastic series of novels.
The first couple of novels where Parker was seeking retribution were as good as it gets, imo.
